Before selecting or keeping a smart lock, review the complete setup. Make sure the exterior door closes and latches properly, the deadbolt extends fully, and the strike plate is secure. Confirm that only current residents, employees, or approved users have codes or app access. Replace weak or shared codes, update the lock software, and respond promptly to low-battery alerts.

Most smart lock problems are preventable. They begin with a door that was never adjusted, access codes that were shared too widely, or a lock chosen for convenience without considering how the property is used. A smart lock should make daily access easier while giving the owner more control, not create another issue to manage.
